This walking tour, led by Lizzy Rowe, will start by stepping off Oxford’s busy High Street and into the calm and cloistered world of All Souls College. Here we will look at the College Chapel, with its beautifully carved reredos screen and host of gilded angels before marvelling at Great Quad, which is adorned with a sundial designed by Christopher Wren. We will then walk the short distance to St Edmund’s or Teddy Hall, a college with about 400 undergraduates (unlike All Souls, which has none) and a claim to be ‘the oldest surviving academic society…..in any university’. Passing the medieval well in the Front Quad, we will go into the Chapel to view a stained-glass window which is one of the earliest works by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. This tour will shed light on the history of Oxford University and give you access to two beautiful colleges and their self-contained worlds.
